## Summary

The procurement process for "Water Disinfection," initiated by United Utilities Water Limited, is currently in the planning stage. This process is aimed at exploring alternative wastewater disinfection technologies. The buyer, based at Lingley Mere Business Park, Warrington, is interested in assessing solutions for wastewater treatment, including sewage treatment services, water-treatment chemicals, and disinfection equipment. The sector involved is services within the utilities special regime, with additional classifications in cleaning and sanitation services. The preliminary market engagement notice was published on 18th September 2025, with an engagement milestone scheduled for 16th October 2025. A future notice is anticipated by 10th November 2025. The project's geographical focus is in the United Kingdom, particularly the UKD region.

This tender offers significant business growth opportunities for suppliers who specialise in sewage treatment services, water-treatment chemicals, and related equipment, especially for firms capable of providing innovative, cost-effective solutions with lower energy usage, suitable for rural or smaller treatment works. The engagement phase represents an excellent opportunity for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to showcase their technologies and potentially influence future procurement processes. Businesses with expertise in pioneering water disinfection and filtration technologies, both in the UK and internationally, can benefit from engaging in this process, potentially leading to collaborative projects and securing future funding bids.

## Notice

We are inviting suppliers to share information on alternative wastewater disinfection technologies. This notice is for market engagement only. It will not necessarily lead to procurement. Across the UK there are more than 600 designated bathing waters, and several shellfish protected areas. These require effective wastewater disinfection to protect both the environment and public health. At present, only ultraviolet treatment and membrane filtration are formally recognised. While proven, both approaches bring challenges: high energy use, high costs, and limited suitability for smaller or rural treatment works. We want to understand what other solutions exist in the market, both in the UK and internationally. This will help us build a clearer picture of what options could be available, what evidence already exists, and where there may be opportunities for collaboration. The insight we gather may also support future funding bids and trial projects. Alongside this notice we will be linking with industry experts and national research projects to make sure there is no duplication and to draw on existing knowledge.
