## Summary

The University of Northumbria at Newcastle recently completed a public procurement process for polymer processing equipment, an essential addition to their advanced research in nanocomposite materials. The contract, identified as T24/0086, was awarded following a limited competition method, ensuring that only technically compliant bids were considered. This procurement phase culminated in December 2025, with contracts signed on the 19th and delivery scheduled to occur starting from 31st December 2025. The goods, including a Micro Compounder, Injection Moulder, and Platen Press, will be installed and commissioned on-site in Newcastle upon Tyne, UKC22 region. The procurement falls under the machinery for working plastics category, embedded within the sub-central government public authority classification.

This procurement provides significant opportunities for growth, particularly for businesses specialising in the supply of scientific research equipment and manufacturing tools. The contract was split between Collin Lab and Pilot Solutions GmbH, a large enterprise from Germany, and Engelmann & Buckham Ltd, a UK-based SME, illustrating the potential for both large and small to medium-sized enterprises to participate in such tenders. With the added benefit of a two-year service and maintenance agreement, suppliers can also forge ongoing relationships with academic institutions. Participation in contracts like this is suitable for companies focusing on innovative R&D equipment with technical compliance capabilities, offering a pathway to establish strong industry partnerships and enhance market visibility.

## Notice

Northumbria University has procured a Micro Compounder, an Injection Moulder and a Platen Press to support advanced research into novel nanocomposites-materials that combine nanoscale fillers with polymer matrices to achieve enhanced physical properties. - The Micro Compounder that capable of processing very small quantities of polymers and additives, ideal for R&D involving expensive or rare substances; - The Injection Moulder that allows for the creation of standardised test specimens with tight control over temperature, pressure, and mould geometry; - The Platen Press that offers programmable pressure and heat settings to form composite sheets or layered samples. The machines will be used in conjunction with each other and physically compatible for a single user to operate. The transfer of samples from a Micro Compounder to either Platen press or Injection Moulder is achievable with minimal user intervention and without requiring any additional tools or adaptors. Following a competitive tender, the requirement was split to ensure technical compliance. Items 1 & 2 were awarded to the UK distributor, while Item 3 was awarded directly to the OEM as the sole authorized provider for that specific item. This purchase includes delivery; offloading; positioning; installation; commissioning; onsite training and 2-year Service and Maintenance contract.
