## Summary

Braintree District Council, located in Braintree, UK, has completed the procurement process for the "Haulage of Waste" contract, which falls under the refuse transport services industry category. The contract was executed through an open procedure, ensuring a competitive bidding process. The contracted services involve the transport of various waste streams, including dry mixed recycling, paper and card, garden waste, Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP's), and general waste. This procurement is in alignment with the legal basis set by UKPGA 2023/54. The finalisation of contracts was awarded to WASTE-A-WAY RECYCLING LIMITED, with a gross value of £2,522,454, scheduled to commence on 1 April 2026 and run until 31 March 2029, with potential for extensions up to March 2031. The introduction of Simpler Recycling reforms, effective from 1 June 2026, will introduce changes to the waste streams, particularly incorporating glass and tetrapaks.

This contract presents a significant opportunity for growth in the refuse transport services sector, particularly targeting small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) capable of handling the logistics involved in waste reprocessing. The nature of the services required will suit businesses adept at efficiently managing recycling and waste logistics. It provides a platform for companies to showcase their operational efficiency and adaptability to evolving waste management regulations such as the Simpler Recycling reforms. Contractors with capabilities in providing large-scale waste transport solutions and innovations in waste logistics management could gain a competitive edge in this growing industry. The focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility also opens avenues for businesses with proven green practices and technologies.
