## Summary

The procurement process involves Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust awarding a contract to Oxford Nanopore Technologies PLC for the delivery of the NHS Respiratory Metagenomics Expansion Programme across 30 NHS sites in the UK. This contract continues the pilot programme that commenced in 2024/25 and is categorised under miscellaneous medical devices and products. It's a direct award based on the patented technology and lack of alternative suppliers. The contract, funded by the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology and overseen by the Office of Life Sciences, is for three years and will expire on 20th November 2028. The procurement method used was 'limited', with no prior publication of a call for competition due to technical reasons and intellectual property rights held by Oxford Nanopore Technologies.

This tender represents growth opportunities for businesses involved in medical devices and biotechnology, especially those capable of providing innovative solutions in the healthcare sector. Companies with expertise in metagenomics and DNA/RNA sequencing can benefit from partnerships and collaborative opportunities that arise from such specialised projects. Businesses that can offer complimentary services or technologies related to bioinformatics, laboratory protocols, or clinical applications may find pathways to engage and grow alongside the NHS and its technological partners. The exclusive nature of the technology used in this programme may limit direct competition, creating opportunities for niche service providers to explore subcontracting or technology adaptation in collaboration with larger entities like Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
