## Summary

The procurement process for the maintenance and repair of LNI Swiss Gas nitrogen generators at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew has reached the award stage. Managed by the Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, a public authority in central government, the contract focuses on ensuring reliable operation of nitrogen generators crucial for laboratory systems used extensively in research and commercial projects. Situated in Kew Green, Surrey, the procurement was carried out through a direct method, below threshold and without competition. The procurement is categorised under services for spectrometers and laboratory services, with the contract active from 5th December 2025 to 4th December 2026, valued at £9,676 excluding VAT (gross amount £11,611). Delivery covers regions across the United Kingdom.

This tender provides a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in laboratory equipment maintenance, particularly those with expertise in nitrogen generator technologies. Given the high reliance on these generators for substantial commercial and scientific endeavours, companies offering prompt service, quality parts, and competitive pricing could see substantial growth through consistent contracts in this industry. The servicing contract includes preventive maintenance, parts replacement, and discounted repair labour, appealing to businesses adept in offering cost-effective and timely maintenance solutions. UVISON Technologies, a large-scale company with prior experience in similar areas, has been awarded the contract, demonstrating the emphasis on proven capability and reliability. Businesses replicating these strengths could successfully capture similar future opportunities.

## Notice

In the Jodrell Laboratory, two LNI Swiss Gas nitrogen generators supply high volumes of high purity nitrogen to four liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS) systems (total value exceeding PS1m). The LCMS systems are heavily used in the delivery of externally-funded projects and Kew's commercial work. Without nitrogen, the LCMS systems cannot be used. Thus, ensuring the nitrogen generators are properly maintained is critical. LNI Swiss Gas nitrogen generators employ patented scroll pump compressor technology and it is this technology that results in them being inaudible above the typical noise level in an LCMS laboratory. At the time of purchase, the tender process revealed they were unmatched in their quietness with noise level being an important specification in the tender (for H&S reasons). The generators also produce a purity of nitrogen gas that, at the time of procurement, exceeded that of other noisier generators tendered. The annual contract sought covers two preventative maintenance visits for each generator including parts scheduled to be replaced at the service interval, 25% discount on repair labour and 72h response time. Both generators are due for an overhaul of the scroll pump in 2026 resulting in an increased service contract cost in 2026 to cover the extra parts required.
