## Summary

NHS England, a central government public authority, has awarded a contract to the University of Oxford for a study titled "Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) TOUCAN STUDY" under the health services category. This study aims to test new devices that rapidly diagnose UTIs, thereby enhancing appropriate antibiotic prescriptions to counter antibiotic resistance in primary care. The procurement process was conducted directly without competition, as it was below the threshold. This contract commences on 1st January 2026 and concludes on 31st March 2026. The total gross value of this contract is £52,869, with the contract being signed on 10th December 2025.

This contract presents opportunities for growth in the medical diagnostics and research field, especially for businesses specialising in health services and diagnostic technologies. Firms involved in developing rapid diagnostic tests and health service providers could find significant value in the study's outcomes and methodologies. The University of Oxford's involvement highlights potential collaboration opportunities for large-scale research enterprises seeking partnerships with reputable academic institutions.

## Notice

Half of all women will experience a UTI at least once. The most common treatment is with an antibiotic. However, the number of bacterial infections which are resistant to antibiotics is rising because women are being prescribed antibiotics which they don't need. This happens because GPs don't have rapid, accurate diagnostic tests to be sure whether a woman needs antibiotics and, if she does, which antibiotic would be most effective. The TOUCAN Study is testing new devices that aim to quickly detect UTI and suggest appropriate antibiotic for treatment. These rapid diagnostic tests could help combat antibiotic resistance by guiding immediate antibiotic prescribing and aid effective treatments in patients. This study is focussed on evaluation of primary care provision of POCT for UTI.
