## Summary

The procurement process conducted by Sellafield Limited for the "3D Concrete Printing" project has culminated in an active contract award, beginning on 7th January 2026 and ending on 31st March 2026, with a total contract value of £240,000. This project, categorized under "Research and experimental development services" (CPV 73100000), aims to demonstrate the capability of 3D concrete printing technology in manufacturing MSSS waste container bunds more efficiently and cost-effectively than traditional methods. The direct award procurement method was used, facilitated by a proven track record of the selected supplier, Change Maker 3D, in the field, supported by industry experts. The procurement stage is now complete, with Sellafield Limited operating from Warrington, UK.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specializing in advanced manufacturing technologies, particularly those focusing on 3D printing applications within the construction and waste management sectors. Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with innovative solutions in concrete printing and similar technologies could find substantial growth opportunities through participation in similar future projects. The project highlights the importance of having a strong track record in regulated industries, which could be crucial for aspiring companies aiming to secure public contracts. The success of this procurement could lead to further phases, potentially opening additional avenues for scaling the demonstrated technology, presenting strategic opportunities for businesses aiming to expand their footprint in the public procurement landscape.

## Notice

Enable the in active demonstration of 3D concrete printing technology capability at a reduced scale to undertake a defined task, specifically the manufacture of the MSSS box bund. For practical reasons, the in active demonstration will be conducted at a slightly reduced scale to facilitate subsequent disposal. The objective of this stage is to test the feasibility of the technique under in active conditions. The in active demonstration will involve 3DCP technology applied to the manufacture of MSSS waste container bunds, which are presently produced using traditional cast concrete methods. The proposed technique is anticipated to be significantly more efficient, cost effective, and flexible, enabling "just in time" manufacture and thereby eliminating the need for storage of empty boxes awaiting filling.

### Procurement Information

A LINC challenge was undertaken in 2023, CM3D were one of two organisations who submitted a proposal and CM3D were the awarded supplier. CM3D demonstrated a proven track record in this field with other regulated industries (water utilities) and a leading specialist, this was underpinned from acknowledged experts in this field. The other proposal was from a start up company, who had key individuals from the nuclear industry, but their technology was still in development and not yet proven in a regulated field. The resulting work from the LINC challenge provided clear evidence that CM3D's technology is both viable and effective and can support this scaled down in active demonstration. in meeting the stated requirements of this award. On the basis of these outcomes, Sellafield Ltd is now positioned to progress to the next stage of work, which will focus on determining whether the solution can be delivered at the scale necessary to support operational deployment. Subject to a successful in active demonstration, it is anticipated that the work will progress to a full-scale demonstration with further refinement of the methodology to ensure operational effectiveness and compliance with regulatory requirements, however, this would be subject to a separate procurement route compliant to PA23.
