## Summary

NHS England has completed the procurement process for the 'Breast Test and Training System (PERFORMS)' aimed at supporting mammography quality assurance within the NHS Breast Screening Programme. The procurement, concluded through a direct award to Performs Assessment Ltd, was driven by the need for continuity and specialized expertise, as outlined in the Procurement Act 2023. This contract, valued at approximately £444,686.12, commenced on 14th February 2026 and is set to run until 31st October 2026. The initiative is classified under health services and clinical information system categories, reflecting its focus on medical education and the enhancement of radiologists' diagnostic capabilities across the UK, with NHS England operating from their headquarters in London.

This procurement offers significant opportunities for businesses with expertise in health services, particularly those specialising in clinical systems and medical education. The direct award method implies a trusted partnership that leverages existing technical expertise and intellectual property rights, suggesting that businesses equipped with legacy system knowledge or specialized technical capabilities in similar fields could position themselves advantageously for future opportunities. Large-scale suppliers experienced in healthcare innovation and service models are particularly well-suited to compete in such procurement processes, as they can provide the essential infrastructure and specialized services needed by central government bodies such as NHS England.

## Notice

The Breast Test and Train (TaT) service supports the quality assurance work and provides NHSE with assurance of the ability of radiologists within the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) to accurately detect the range of cancers that they might be presented with in the population. It provides the means to enable radiologists to recognise a range of cancers, including those that are of a rarer condition which in turn, results in less harm to those undergoing mammography. Due to delays arising from administrative and operational circumstances, NHS England awarded this contract to Performs Assessment Limited , commencing -01.04.2025 to 31.10.2026
