## Summary

The University of Sheffield, a public authority in sub-central government based in Sheffield, has concluded the procurement process for a Laser Wire Directed Energy Deposition (Lw-DED) System. This tender, managed through an open procedure in accordance with the Procurement Act 2023, was aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, North West. The contract, awarded to 3D GB IRE Ltd, covers a period from 20th March 2026 to 19th March 2028, with a gross value of £309,944.40. The tender falls under the industry categories of industrial lasers and machinery, with a focus on improving industrial capabilities through precise deposition technologies.

This procurement presents substantial opportunities for growth, especially for businesses involved in advanced manufacturing and industrial machinery. Companies with expertise in laser technology and industrial machinery are well-positioned to benefit, as the addition of a Lw-DED system at the AMRC promises to support process development and encourage the adoption of DED technologies across industries. The tender received bids primarily from SMEs, highlighting opportunities for similar enterprises to engage in future procurement processes with the University of Sheffield and similar institutions.

## Notice

4950.AM.GM Laser Wire Directed Energy Deposition (Lw-DED) System The University of Sheffield wishes to invite tenders for a Laser Wire Directed Energy Deposition (Lw-DED) System on behalf of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, North West. Scope of Requirement The proposed investment in a laser wire Directed Energy Deposition (Lw-DED) system would represent a complementary capability, rather than a duplication of existing infrastructure. A laser wire DED platform would enable lower heat input compared with wire-arc systems, improved dimensional accuracy, precise repair applications and wide range of material processing capability, including refractory materials. The addition of a Lw-DED system would significantly enhance AMRC's additive manufacturing capability by enabling coverage across the full spectrum of DED processes, from high deposition rate applications to highly-controlled, precise deposition. This would strengthen the AMRC ability to support process development and accelerate the industrial adoption of DED technologies. Tender Process and Documentation: This procurement is an open procedure conducted in accordance with the Procurement Act 2023.
