## Summary

The procurement process for the "Nantycreiau Culvert Repairs" has been completed by the Mining Remediation Authority, a public authority within the central government of the United Kingdom, located in Nottinghamshire. The project aimed at ensuring the structural integrity and environmental protection of the Nantycreiau culvert, which was at risk due to sediment loss and potential blockages. The culvert repairs are part of the services category, facilitated through a direct procurement method without competition. The contract was awarded to MIDWEST PLANT LIMITED with an active contract term running from 16th February 2026 to 31st May 2026. The project is deemed critical due to its environmental impact and involves a contract value of GBP 52,585.95.

The tender provides substantial opportunities for businesses in environmental services, particularly those specialising in infrastructural maintenance and environmental protection. Companies with experience in handling projects related to watercourse management and pollution control could significantly benefit from similar future contracts. SMEs like MIDWEST PLANT LIMITED, which have shown capability in managing such projects, have strong prospects in this domain, given the government’s focus on maintaining ecological standards and infrastructure integrity. Businesses equipped with the expertise to operate under potentially challenging site conditions due to weather variances will find these tenders beneficial for growth and expansion in the public sector contracting arena.

## Notice

The works are required to protect the integrity of the scour protection works and avoid further sediment loss to the watercourse asset should the culvert collapse or lead to channel blockage. Site inspections carried out by the original scour protection contractor and MRA engineers suggest that during the storm, water backed up in the culvert, overtopped the headwall, and flowed over the adjacent path into the channel. This overflow has caused a washout of fine soils around the existing metal pipe at the outfall, further compromising the stability of the culvert. In recent months a deterioration has been noted in that a new hole has been discovered in the culvert and this has lead to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) / Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru flagging this situation as a pollution incident. Complete collapse would likely result in all of the polluted legacy mining spoil, from above and surrounding the culvert, washing down the watercourse.
