## Summary

The NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership-Procurement Services, hosted by Velindre University NHS Trust, has concluded the procurement process for the evaluation of a Weight Loss App titled "Nutracheck". This initiative aims to assess the app's effectiveness in promoting weight loss among disadvantaged communities in Cardiff. The contracting process, classified under the services category and governed by Welsh devolved regulations, was completed with an award to Cardiff Metropolitan University. The contract, valued at £96,127, started on 9th February 2026 and will run until 28th February 2030, encompassing a comprehensive data analysis from both the broader participant base and a focused sub-group, with key insights expected to emerge over intervals of 6 months and extended periods of up to 3 years. The project is based in Cardiff, UK, with key contact through Lowri Crossman at the NHS Wales procurement team.

This contract offers significant prospects for businesses specialising in data analysis, health technology, and community health interventions. Cardiff Metropolitan University, already recognised for its excellence in health research, leverages this opportunity to further its expertise in the domain. Companies involved in health sciences, providing analytical tools, or developing health-related educational programs are well-positioned to benefit from this procurement outcome. The focus on long-term collaboration and impact within local communities can also open doors for subcontractors keen on contributing to health improvement in disadvantaged populations, ensuring broader engagement and potential for innovation in addressing public health challenges.

## Notice

Nutracheck is a mobile application that facilitates weight loss in individuals. The app monitors food consumption, physical activity and weight loss over time. Cardiff and Vale UHB needs to understand if using this application in our most disadvantaged communities works to encourage weight loss over a 6 month period. Cardiff and Vale UHB have awarded Cardiff Metropolitan University the a contract to analyse anonymised data from the Nutracheck app from circa 1,000 participants; plus, a small sub-group of around 100 participants for more intensive evaluation on biomarkers and relevant questionnaires over the same time period, and then over the next 2-3 years. Cardiff and Vale UHB would like to understand whether a mobile application (Nutracheck) works to support more disadvantaged populations to lose weight over a 6 month period initially, and then over 2-3 years. The Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences is a recognised centre of excellence in the UK, with an international reputation for the quality of its research across health and exercise sciences. The School works in collaboration with their students and industry partners, health boards, sport national governing bodies and many others to deliver impactful research. The school hosts multiple inter-disciplinary research and innovation centres, including the Food Industry Centre, the Integrative and Applied Physiology group, Centre for Cardiovascular Research, Innovation, and Development. Each drawing upon expertise within Cardiff Metropolitan University, including internationally recognised experts in food science, dietetics, food legislation, environmental health, exercise prescription and biomedical sciences.
