## Summary

The British Museum has embarked on a significant procurement process to appoint a Registered Building Control Approver for its Western Range re-development project. The procurement and tender documents involve the management support of Gardiner & Theobald LLP and were awarded on the 2nd of July 2026, with BUREAU VERITAS UK LIMITED winning the contract valued at £379,600. The contract, taking the form of an open procedure, targets the services sector under building-inspection services, classified under CPV code 71315400. Key dates include the commencement of the contract on the 15th of July 2026, lasting until the 31st of March 2036, primarily located in London, United Kingdom.

This tender presents comprehensive opportunities for firms with expertise in building inspection and management to engage in a decade-long project surrounding the iconic British Museum. Businesses, especially SMEs that can offer competitive quality and price, have the potential to gain long-term benefits and growth from participating in such a high-profile and prestigious project. The priority given to quality and price in the award criteria suggests that firms with a balanced offer of expertise and cost efficiency are well-suited to compete in and benefit from this procurement initiative. Participating in this project allows companies to align with a forward-thinking re-development in the cultural sector, enhancing their profile and expanding their portfolio within the UK and internationally.

## Notice

The British Museum wishes to appoint a Registered Building Control Approver to provide Building Control advice throughout the re-development of the Western Range and associated enabling works projects. The Western Range is a substantial part of the estate that is in urgent need of both repair and re-imagining. The re-development offers the Museum an opportunity to make a statement of its future intent, through reimagined galleries, new state-of-the-art storage facilities and engaging contemporary architecture, in juxtaposition to the highly significant and already celebrated listed buildings on the site. The Western Range comprises around 7,500m2 of gallery space and currently houses the Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece (including the Parthenon Sculptures), Rome, and Ancient Assyria and Middle East collections, along with 4,500m2 of back-of-house collection storage space.
