## Summary

The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has commissioned Barnardo's to provide family support services at the Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH). This procurement relates to the healthcare services industry, classified under welfare services for children and young people. The process has reached the award stage, with the contract officially awarded on 31st July 2025. The procurement was executed using a limited method under the Provider Selection Regime for healthcare services, focusing on a direct award process without prior publication of a competitive call. The contract, valued at approximately £55,000, is scheduled to conclude on 30th June 2026. Located in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UKC22 region, the project seeks to alleviate pressure on healthcare settings by providing nonclinical support to families through Barnardo's Family Support Workers.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in family support and social welfare services, particularly those adept at providing psycho-social interventions aimed at reducing health inequalities. While Barnardo's has secured the contract, other service providers with an emphasis on innovative quality solutions, service integration, sustainability, and social value may find similar opportunities in future tenders. Businesses with the ability to facilitate seamless integration with existing healthcare frameworks and deliver valued services that address both environmental and socioeconomic health determinants will be well-suited to compete for such contracts, fostering potential growth within the public health and social care service sector.

## Notice

The Great North Children's Hospital Trust is commissioning Barnardo's to provide Family Support in their Emergency Department. Barnardo's Family Support Workers offer psycho-social support to families in various health settings, this aims to reduce pressures on the health system whilst providing accessible, nonclinical support to families when they need it most.
Barnardo's Family Support Workers work with families who may not meet the threshold for traditional children's services intervention, or who may not be accessing their community services and may require support to ensure equitable access, focussing on the environmental and socioeconomic causes of ill-health to make lasting change for families.
This can mean meeting someone at their home, in the community, or over the phone, to talk through their circumstances and either agree an action plan, signpost, or refer to the relevant services and if needed, support with this initial engagement. We do this in partnership with the family and local providers to help families access the right support at the right time and reduce health inequalities.
The aim is to reduce pressure on healthcare settings by encouraging families to tap into locally available support which is more appropriate for their level of need.
