The procurement process titled "HPASOS Support Extension" was undertaken by Defence Equipment and Support, a central government public authority based in Bristol, UK. This tender falls under the industry category of defence and security, specifically related to "Military transport helicopters" and "Repair and maintenance services of helicopters." The procurement stage is in the award phase, with a contract awarded on 13th May 2026. The procurement method used was a direct award, emphasising a single supplier due to technical grounds, resulting in Summit Defence Ltd being selected as the supplier. The contract period is from 1st July 2026 to 30th June 2027, with the awarded value totalling £1,565,096.48, inclusive of VAT.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in defence equipment support and maintenance, particularly those that can leverage their technical expertise in military transport systems. Firms similar to Summit Defence Ltd, which is recognised as the Original Equipment Manufacturer and Design Authority for the Chinook Aircrew Supplementary Oxygen System, are well-suited to maximise growth from such contracts. The preparation to meet stringent safety standards and having access to comprehensive technical documentation is crucial for successfully competing in this niche market. Businesses in this sector could find a competitive edge by aligning with national security requirements, focusing on direct award contracts that offer opportunities for SMEs.

### Procurement Information

The Chinook Delivery Team, part of the Ministry of Defence, intends to award a contract to Summit Defence Ltd for the supply and support of the High Pressure Aircrew Supply Oxygen System (HPASOS) used onboard the Chinook aircraft. The contract will be for a period of 12 months and have an estimated value of up to PS220,000 (inc. VAT). It is considered that this contract can be awarded under section 41 of the Procurement Act 2023 because the direct award justification specified in paragraph 6 of Schedule 5 (single supplier - technical grounds) applies. This is because Summit Defence Limited is the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and Design Authority (DA) for the HPASOS and has supported it since it was introduced into service on 1st March 2021. Only the OEM has access to the technical knowledge and documentation to meet MoD's safety standards to fulfil this requirement, there are no reasonable alternatives.
