## Summary

Peterborough City Council is overseeing the Flag Fen Western Causeway Archaeological Investigation, a project categorised under excavation work at archaeological sites in the services industry. The work will be conducted in the region of UKH11, near Peterborough, United Kingdom. Currently in the Tender stage, the procurement process is open with an accelerated procedure due to urgent site conditions. The tender was initiated on 22 July 2026, with submissions due by 3 August 2026, and the contract award period ending on 14 August 2026. The project's primary objective is to carry out targeted excavations around the Bronze Age site to preserve valuable archaeological and palaeoenvironmental data. The procurement method is open, inviting wide participation from interested parties.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in archaeological services, especially those experienced in excavation and site preservation, to engage with a public authority of sub-central government. With a project value of £696,500 (net of VAT), this is an attractive contract for medium to large companies and organisations with relevant expertise, particularly given the emphasis on quality over price in the award criteria. The successful tenderer will not only contribute to preserving a nationally significant monument but also gain a prominent role in facilitating community involvement. Such projects can enhance a company's portfolio, bolster its reputation within the archaeological sector, and expand its network by allowing collaborative efforts with local communities and authorities.

## Notice

Flag Fen, near Peterborough, is a nationally significant wooden Bronze Age post alignment and timber platform with associated artefacts and palaeoenvironmental remains. The archaeology is preserved within an embayment of low-lying wetland known as the Flag Fen basin. It is designated as a scheduled monument, along with adjacent dry-land Bronze Age remains at Northey. Preliminary work indicated that the fragile organic remains are degrading, which was confirmed following recent evaluation excavations commissioned by Historic England (Knight 2023). The aim of this project is to carry out targeted intrusive excavations over an area of the post alignment to recover samples of wood before degradation removes the evidential value of the site completely. This work will include a high level of public participation opportunities for local people to take part in all aspects of the excavations. To summarise, the Council is seeking a competent contractor to fulfil the following objectives: To characterise the remains of the westernmost area of the post alignment through archaeological excavation. To record and sample the horizontal and vertical wooden remains for technological assessments and species identification. To obtain samples from deposits associated with the post alignment to characterise their potential for informing on the use of the structure. To obtain samples from the wood to carry out scientific dating. To obtain samples for palaeoenvironmental analysis.
