## Summary

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust procured outsourced elective gynaecology services for around 500 patients awaiting treatment. The supplier provides an end-to-end pathway from initial outpatient appointment through diagnostics, treatment, follow-up where clinically required and discharge to the referring clinician or GP. Services cover general gynaecology, vulval disorders and menopause services, including hysterectomy, diagnostic laparoscopy, cystectomy, endometrial ablation, anterior and posterior repairs, and prolapse surgery. The scope also includes clinical triage, investigations, treatment planning, medical management and office-based procedures. The provider remains clinically responsible until formal discharge, must manage records securely and escalate patients needing urgent cancer assessment, emergency care or tertiary services. Delivery is local to the Trust’s patient population in and around Romford.

The procurement has reached the award stage. It used a Provider Selection Regime direct award under Procedure C, with one completed lot. Spire Healthcare PLC was selected, and the award was dated 14 August 2026. The awarded contract value is £310,000 including tax, with a contract period from 4 September 2026 to 31 March 2027. The award covers health and social work services. The direct award rationale was that Spire was the incumbent, had delivered the service to a high standard, was integrated into the patient pathway, represented value for money and could provide local access. Changing provider or mobilising a replacement was considered disruptive to patients. A signature milestone was scheduled for 4 September 2026.

This requirement is most relevant to established healthcare providers able to deliver complete elective gynaecology pathways rather than isolated procedures. A credible future competitor would need appropriately qualified clinical teams covering general gynaecology, vulval disorders and menopause services, together with access to diagnostic, investigation and treatment facilities. Capability should extend from triage and first consultation through treatment planning, medical management, surgery or office-based procedures, follow-up and discharge. Providers would also need robust clinical governance, secure handling of patient records, prompt correspondence to referring clinicians and reliable escalation arrangements for cancer, emergency or tertiary-care needs. The award indicates that the Trust values continuity, local patient access, integrated pathways, proven service quality and the ability to manage patients without unnecessary transfer back to the Trust.
