## Summary

National Grid Electricity Transmission plc plans to establish a framework for SF6 leak repair, leak reduction and preventative treatment services across its Gas Insulated Switchgear and Gas Insulated Busbar assets at transmission substations throughout Great Britain. The work is an engineering and electrical equipment maintenance service, covering the design, installation, testing, inspection and quality assurance of external, non-intrusive repair solutions. Interventions may include permanent repairs, leak-rate reduction treatments and preventative measures, typically without taking equipment out of service where reasonably practicable. The purpose is to reduce or prevent SF6 emissions while maintaining asset integrity and operational performance across National Grid’s electricity transmission network. The framework is classified under electrical equipment repair, installation and mechanical and electrical engineering services.

This procurement is at the planning stage: National Grid has announced its intention to procure, but has not yet issued an invitation to tender. It expects to use a selective competitive flexible procedure to establish a closed framework with up to six participants. The estimated value is £7.5 million excluding VAT, or £9 million including VAT. The buyer expects to publish the tender notice on 18 November 2026 and asks interested suppliers to submit expressions of interest by 25 November 2026. The expected award decision date is 10 May 2027, with the framework planned to start on 31 May 2027. The initial term is three years, with two possible one-year extensions by mutual agreement, giving a maximum end date of 31 May 2032. Competition may be reopened for some requirements.

This will suit contractors with national coverage and the ability to work across Great Britain’s electricity transmission substations. Relevant businesses will need practical expertise in SF6 leak detection, repair, emissions reduction and preventative treatment on GIS and GIB assets, together with electrical and mechanical engineering capability. The buyer is looking for technically robust, evidence-based repair methods that can be designed, installed, tested, inspected and quality-assured without disrupting equipment operation where practicable. Contractors are expected to operate under an ISO 9001-compliant quality management system and to undertake the roles of Principal Contractor and Principal Designer under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. Suppliers should prepare evidence of national reach, regulatory compliance, asset-integrity management and safe delivery in operational transmission environments before the tender is issued.

## Notice

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) intends to establish a framework for the provision of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) leak repair, leak reduction and preventative treatment services across its portfolio of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Gas Insulated Busbar (GIB) assets located at transmission substations throughout Great Britain. The framework is intended to increase the delivery of SF6 emissions reduction activities through the use of standardised contracting arrangements and approved repair methodologies. Appointed contractors will be responsible for the design, installation, testing, inspection and quality assurance of external, non-intrusive repair solutions that maintain asset integrity and operational performance while reducing or preventing SF6 leakage. Solutions may include permanent repairs, leak-rate reduction treatments, and preventative interventions, and will typically be required to be installed without taking equipment out of service where reasonably practicable. Contractors will be expected to provide technically robust, evidence-based solutions, operate under ISO 9001-compliant quality management systems, and fulfil the roles of Principal Contractor and Principal Designer under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. The framework will enable NGET to respond efficiently to emerging SF6 emission reduction requirements across its transmission network. The anticipated term of the framework will be a 3-year initial term with 2 year extension options upon mutual agreement.
