## Summary

The Horniman Public Museum and Public Park Trust is procuring works to replace the refrigerated Spirit Store at its Study Collection Centre, Old School Close, Greenwich, London SE10 0PG. The facility safely stores organic and biological museum specimens preserved in flammable spirits such as denatured alcohol and formalin, requiring controlled temperatures and secure conditions. The requirement covers developing the Employer’s Requirements into a design, then fabricating, constructing, delivering, erecting and fitting out the replacement store. It also includes site preparation, groundworks, utilities and services, construction of an associated firewall, and repositioning other container stores on the site with related groundworks. This is a specialist construction and scientific-storage installation project, covering cleanroom or controlled-environment installation and construction of research or laboratory facilities.

The procurement has reached tender: the Trust invited offers through a below-threshold open competition. Enquiries must be submitted by 6pm on 2 October 2026. Completed tender submissions must be received electronically by 12 noon on 9 October 2026, using the stated submission email address. The contract is scheduled to run from 30 October 2026 to 26 February 2027. Its estimated value is £110,000 excluding VAT, or £132,000 including VAT. There is one lot. Offers will be evaluated on cost and quality, weighted 60% and 40% respectively. Suppliers must complete the quality assessment questions in the Quality Questions and Scoring Methodology document. Interviews may be held by video conference before 23 October 2026 if required.

This opportunity suits a contractor able to take responsibility for both design development and delivery of a specialist, secure refrigerated storage facility. Relevant capability includes designing and installing temperature-controlled environments for sensitive materials, fabricating and fitting out containerised buildings, and managing construction works around an operational museum collection. The work also calls for practical expertise in groundworks, utility and service connections, firewall construction, delivery and erection of large units, and repositioning existing containers. Suppliers should be able to coordinate multiple disciplines, work safely with facilities storing flammable-preserved biological and organic specimens, and demonstrate reliable project management from design through completion. It is particularly relevant to construction firms, specialist modular or refrigerated-unit providers, scientific-installation contractors and businesses with suitable delivery and site-installation capacity.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a grade II* listed museum with a world class Natural History, Anthropology and Musical instrument collection. Items in the Horniman Collection when not on display are stored, managed, studied and conserved at the Study Collection Centre (SCC). The existing Spirit Store is a refrigerated container which holds generally organic and biological items which are preserved in vessels of flammable spirit such as denatured alcohol or formalin. The store requires replacement. The Horniman wishes to appoint a contractor to develop their Employer's Requirements into a design and deliver the works for a replacement Spirit Store. The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a grade II* listed museum with a world class Natural History, Anthropology and Musical instrument collection. Set within 16 acres of stunning grounds that also house an Aquarium, Animal Walk and Butterfly House. The Horniman connects us all with global cultures and the natural environment, encouraging us to shape a positive future for the world we all share. Items in the Horniman Collection when not on display are stored, managed, studied and conserved at the Study Collection Centre (SCC), Old School Close, Greenwich, London SE10 0PG. Many items require very particular storage conditions for safety and conservation. At SCC, the existing Spirit Store holds generally organic and biological items which are preserved in vessels of flammable spirit such as denatured alcohol or formalin. Due to the need for flashpoint temperature control and inherent fire risk, the Spirit Store is a secure refrigerated walk-in container which stands apart from the main storage building. The Spirit Store container is aged with general conditional, operational and plant performance limitations which give risk to safety and collection conservation risks. The nature and quantity of the museum's collection is also changing over time, and working practices are updating. These are the key drivers presenting opportunity for a project to re-provide a modernised Spirit Store facility. There are further containers on site which require re-organisation by repositioning them during this project. Project broadly includes: * The contractor's design of a replacement Spirit Store. * The contractor's fabrication, construction, delivery, erection and fitting out of the replacement Spirit Store. * The contractor's associated site preparations, groundworks, utilities and services provision. * The contractor's associated firewall construction * The contractor's carrying out repositioning of further existing container stores on the site, with associated groundworks.
