## Summary

The Mining Remediation Authority is planning construction works at Wemyss Metal Mine in Wales, delivered through the Wales Metal Mine Programme with Natural Resources Wales. The project supports river basin and metal-mine water management objectives under the Western Wales River Basin Management Plan. The works are intended to control and manage water flows and runoff around the former mine site. They include an upper storage and attenuation pond, increased bund height and flow-control infrastructure; a new open channel bypassing a circular collapse feature; highway and filter drainage; and a lined water channel with flow monitors leading to the Nant Cwmnewydion. This procurement is at the planning stage: the buyer has announced an intention to tender in the near future and has not invited bids. The buyer is carrying out preliminary market engagement and asks interested contractors to provide information about their organisation and relevant contact details by 9 October 2026. The project should suit civil engineering and environmental remediation contractors able to deliver earthworks, water-management infrastructure and drainage works in a former metal-mine setting. Relevant capability includes constructing and raising earth bunds, forming attenuation or storage ponds, installing flow-control infrastructure, excavating open channels, building lined watercourses, fitting flow-monitoring equipment and delivering highway drainage and filter drains. Contractors with experience in ford construction, channel crossings and managing runoff around spoil tips may be well placed to prepare for the future tender. The scale includes approximately 90-metre bund and pond works and a 95-metre lined channel, alongside associated infrastructure. The buyer has identified the requirement as suitable for SMEs, so smaller experienced contractors and suitable delivery partnerships should consider engaging during planning.

## Notice

These works will be delivered as part of the Wales Metal Mine Programme (WMMP) between NRW and the Mining Remediation Authority. This programme supports the Western Wales River Basin Management Plan (Western Wales River Basin Management Plan 2021 - 2027 which was published as a final plan in July 2022 (specifically measures CYM49 - Deliver metal (non-coal) mine water programme as identified under the Metal Mine Strategy for Wales and WW0031 - Continue to investigate mine water impact and develop remediation plans in accordance with the Metal Mines Strategy for Wales). This plan has a statutory function associated with the Water Framework Directive (The Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017). Works - Summer 2027 * Introduction of an Upper Storage/Attenuation Pond to reduce flows into Upper Mill Race Stream. This will include increasing the existing bund height and installing flow control infrastructure. Approx length 90 metres and approx. height 1.5 metres. * Bypass the circular collapse feature east of Glanville's Shaft with new open channel. * Introduction of highway drainage system and filter drain to avoid runoff finding its way into the main spoil tip. * A new lined water channel with flow monitors from the public highway to the Nant Cwmnewydion, construing a new ford crossing and improving the existing ford crossing. Approx. length 95 metres.
