## Summary

Nottingham Trent University is procuring the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a relocatable 1.5T whole-body MRI system, including the modular unit and information needed for building planning. The system is intended for human and non-human imaging, including research involving materials and food, with potential to expand to large-animal studies. It will provide a hospital-equivalent environment for teaching and support research across physics, psychology, food science, engineering and materials. The facility is intended for use by university schools and external UK academic users, SMEs and industrial partners. The system will be installed at the university’s Clifton Campus in Nottingham. The requirement combines specialist MRI equipment with turnkey delivery, site installation and commissioning.

The university invited tenders through an open procedure. The procurement is a single lot, with bids due by 18 November 2026 at 10:00 UTC; enquiries were due by 16 November 2026 at 23:59 UTC. The intended contract period runs from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2028, with an award decision scheduled by 6 January 2027. The estimated value is £583,333 excluding VAT (£700,000 including VAT). Evaluation gives 30% to price and 70% to quality, covering turnkey delivery, MRI hardware and software, physiological monitoring and external hardware, site requirements, service delivery, sustainability, and added value from collaboration and strategic partnership. Economic and technical selection criteria apply; the university identifies the opportunity as suitable for SMEs.

This opportunity suits an MRI supplier able to deliver a complete, relocatable 1.5T system rather than equipment alone. Bidders need the technical capability to provide a wide-bore, 60 cm system for human and non-human imaging, with control of imaging sequences and parameters for non-human studies. Delivery capability must cover modular design, supply, installation, commissioning and the information required for building planning. The specification calls for a robust, low-maintenance and future-ready research facility that can support teaching, postgraduate training and sustained research. Suppliers should be equipped to meet hardware, software, physiological-monitoring, external-hardware and site requirements, and provide ongoing service delivery. The quality assessment also rewards sustainability and meaningful collaboration, including knowledge exchange, UK industry engagement and support for student and staff research.

## Notice

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) invites tenders from suitably qualified and experienced suppliers for the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of a 1.5T relocatable MRI system. This will allow us to support a wide range of teaching activities as well as academic and commercial research projects with a strong focus on adaptability and multiple use. The modular unit will be located at NTU's Clifton Campus and will be used for multidisciplinary projects in physics, psychology, food science and engineering, materials and many more. Project Objectives The primary objectives of this procurement are to: *Establish an up to date, wide bore (60cm) MRI facility at Nottingham Trent university suitable for use for human imaging, non-human imaging (e.g. materials and foods) with options for expanding into large animal studies in the future. *Provide a "hospital equivalent" installation to facilitate real world learning experience for students. *Enable full control over imaging sequences and parameters for non-human studies. *Establish a robust, low-maintenance, and future-proof research infrastructure capable of supporting sustained academic research, postgraduate training, and long-term operation. *Enable access and service provision to users from across all schools of the university, as well as external UK academic users, SMEs, and industrial partners. *Foster strategic collaboration with the successful supplier, including support for UK industry engagement, knowledge exchange as well as student and staff research activities. The successful contractor will be responsible for the complete delivery, installation and commissioning of a modular relocatable MRI system including provision of all necessary information to meet building planning requirements.
