## Summary

Diamond Light Source Limited is procuring a double-crystal monochromator for its K04 beamline at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Didcot, Oxfordshire. The equipment is for an ultra-high-throughput macromolecular crystallography beamline supporting biological sample analysis and the XChem facility’s early-stage drug discovery work. The required system includes a horizontally deflecting, asymmetrically cut monochromator, three crystal sets, interfaces with the cooling system, vacuum equipment, crystal support and manipulation, and connections to beamline services. The scope covers design, manufacture, testing, delivery, installation and commissioning, with development in collaboration with Diamond’s engineers. This is specialist scientific instrumentation procurement, classified as X-ray devices (CPV 33111000).

The buyer invited offers through an open procedure. The procurement comprises one lot and has an estimated value of £321,000 excluding VAT (£385,200 including VAT). The submission deadline was 27 November 2026 at 12:00 UTC, and the stated end of the award period was 9 December 2026. The contract period is scheduled from 4 January 2027 to 4 July 2028. Bids could be submitted electronically in English. Evaluation assigns 40% to price, 25% to technical quality, 25% to experience and capacity, 5% to commercial considerations and 5% to delivery. The lot is identified as suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises.

This opportunity is suited to suppliers with specialist capability in designing and manufacturing precision X-ray monochromator systems for scientific beamlines. A competitive supplier will need to demonstrate the technical ability to produce a horizontally deflecting, asymmetrically cut double-crystal assembly, provide crystal sets and integrate them with cooling, vacuum, support, manipulation and beamline services. The work also calls for testing, delivery, installation and commissioning, so suppliers need the engineering resources and project coordination to deliver a complete operational system. Experience and capacity carry the same substantial evaluation weight as technical quality, making relevant delivery track record and the ability to work collaboratively with Diamond Light Source engineers important. The single-lot package is marked suitable for SMEs, while the overall requirement remains a specialist, integrated scientific-instrumentation project.

## Notice

Located on the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, Diamond Light Source (DLS) is a leading-edge facility for science, engineering and innovation. DLS allows researchers from academia and industry to investigate the structure and behaviour of the world around us at the atomic and molecular level. To continue delivering the world-changing science that Diamond enables, the facility is being upgraded to Diamond-II, a co-ordinated programme of development that combines a major machine upgrade with new instruments and complementary improvements to optics, detectors, sample environment and delivery capabilities, and computing, as well as integrated and correlative methods. This will be transformative in speed and spatial resolution and will offer users streamlined access to enhanced instruments for life and physical sciences. The K04 beamline will be an ultra-high throughput Macromolecular Crystallography beamline optimised for the study of biological samples (fragment screening) to support the XChem facility in early-stage lead drug discovery. K04 will greatly increase DLS's capacity to carry out XChem experiments by up to 20x, accelerating drug discovery timelines and related research for both the academic community and industrial customers. The monochromator system shall include the VACCS cooling system (Vacuum Aspirated Cryo Cooling System) and three crystal sets. This full system will be developed in collaboration with engineers at DLS. The minimum scope of the contract is the design, manufacture, test, delivery, installation and commissioning of: * A horizontally deflecting, asymmetric cut, double crystal monochromator (DCM) * The crystal sets and interfaces with DLS-designed cooling system(s) * Vacuum system in line with DLS Vacuum requirements * Crystal support and manipulation system * Interfacing with beamline services. See specification for further details.
