## Summary

Historic England is commissioning research into how sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) can be integrated sensitively into historic places. The work will develop an initial evidence base of case studies to inform updated guidance, examining how SuDS can support climate adaptation, water management, biodiversity and nature recovery while protecting heritage significance. It will identify good practice, decision-making approaches, policy considerations and implementation challenges across different historic settings and stakeholder groups. The requirement combines research with expertise relevant to the historic environment, drainage, landscape and natural resource management. The work is for Historic England and covers sites and contexts across the United Kingdom.

Historic England invited offers through an open competition for this below-threshold services contract. The enquiry deadline was 23 November 2026 at 17:00 UTC, and the submission deadline was 30 November 2026 at 09:30 UTC. The contract period runs from 11 January to 17 September 2027, with provision for a one-month extension, up to 15 October 2027. The estimated value is £25,000 excluding VAT (£30,000 including VAT). The procurement is a single lot. Offers are assessed on quality, weighted at 70%, and price, weighted at 30%.

This is suited to research and consultancy suppliers able to bring together understanding of sustainable drainage, climate adaptation and water management with heritage conservation. Relevant strengths include designing or analysing case studies across varied historic contexts, assessing effects on heritage significance, and drawing practical lessons into guidance and decision-making frameworks. Suppliers should be able to consider biodiversity and nature recovery alongside policy, stakeholder perspectives and real-world implementation challenges. The broad scope may suit smaller firms and voluntary, community or social enterprises as well as specialist consultancies, provided they can deliver a coherent evidence base and actionable findings across the United Kingdom. The work calls for a multidisciplinary approach spanning research, landscape or engineering expertise, environmental management and historic-site conservation.

## Notice

This project seeks to develop an initial evidence base formed of a series of case studies to inform updated guidance on the sensitive integration of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) within the historic environment. It will examine how SuDS can support climate adaptation, water management, biodiversity enhancement and nature recovery while safeguarding heritage significance, and will identify best practice, case studies, decision-making frameworks, policy considerations, and implementation challenges across a range of historic contexts and stakeholder groups.
