The SMARTer ICELL8cx Single-Cell System is an automation platform that combines imaging with single cell isolation. The ICELL8cx system enables the controlled capture, selection and preparation of single cells for gene expression profiling. The ICELL8 system is unique in comparison to other existing single cell isolation and library preparation platforms, enabling cells of any size to be selected and run with SmartSeq library preparation to obtain comparatively far deeper single cell transcriptomic read depth and library complexity. As compared to performing SmartSeq library preparation by bespoke in normal laboratory settings, the control and sample volumes implemented on the ICELL8 platform more than halves the cost. Furthermore, as a complete single-box automated solution, the ICELL8 system enables sensitive RNA library preparations to be more reliably and reproducibly made without great expertise. The rapid adoption by the research community of the ICELL8 as an open platform is leading to new protocols for studying single cells. Overall, the ICELL8 enables unique scientific studies as compared to other existing devices, and enables reproducibility and reduction in cost as compared to bespoke laboratory approaches.
