## Summary

The Gelligaer & Merthyr Commoners Association is seeking to appoint a qualified ecologist for the "Great Crested Newt & Water Vole Investigation" project, which is in the award stage of the procurement process. This public procurement falls under the services category and addresses environmental impact assessments. The contact for this opportunity is Simon James, who can be reached at +44 7960388075. The original tender was issued on 9th May 2022, with a tender period that closed on 12th May 2022. The contract related to this tender was signed on 13th June 2022.

This contract offers significant growth opportunities for businesses in environmental consultancy, particularly those with expertise in ecological surveys and assessments. Ecologists and firms specializing in environmental auditing or habitat restoration would be ideally positioned to compete for future tenders relating to ecological assessments, especially as the project is part of broader initiatives funded by the Welsh Government and the European Union focused on sustainable environmental management and public engagement.

## Notice

GMCA wishes to appoint a suitable qualified and experienced ecologist to;Undertake a Great Crested Newt survey of waterbodies within 250m of 21work areas, see Annex A for detailed maps. NRW have deemed a waterbodyas, 'any feature which holds water either permanently, seasonally orfollowing periods of heavy rainfall'. If GCN are found at a work site, an assessment should be made to whether the work we propose to undertake will require a licence. Due to time and financial constraints, we would explore alternative works to avoid the need for a licence. For example, Cadw required us to undertake a heritage Impact Assessment, where there was areas of high historical importance, the creation of a ditch and bund was replaced by amore sensitive solution such as placing boulders on the ground surface.Water Voles - NRW have informed us that although they are not aware ofany records of this species in the proposed work areas, they would like thepotential presence of this species considered by a professional ecologist.
