The Department of Biomedical Engineering develops synthetic experimental systems to assess the efficacy of medical devices and implants. Target applications involve studying the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The interaction of the fluid and solid tissue structure is of great importance to understand the mechanics of that system in health and disease. High-fidelity computational modelling frameworks already exist within the Department. This contract hopes to acquire hardware to enable fluid-structure interaction (FSI) measurements to be performed, to help validate such computational models. Expertise and hardware already exist for non-contact optical techniques such as digital image correlation (DIC), particle image velocimetry (PIV) at low speeds and high-frame rates. However, this contract aims to purchase an all-in-one integrated FSI system to couple DIC and PIV - delivering FSI analysis in one platform. An FSI non-contact optical measurement system, capable of volumetric particle image velocimetry, or stereo-DIC and stereo-PIV is sought. A 4-camera system will suffice for most applications in mind.
