The contracted amount is £170,000, and the procurement method used was the limited procedure, which means the tender was awarded without prior publication of a call for competition due to specific needs.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specializing in medical training equipment, simulation technology, or educational services. The investment into the Ophthalmic Simulation Suite, supported by £760,000 of Welsh Government funding, ensures ongoing demand for high-quality educational materials and technology. Large corporations and niche training and technology firms would be ideally positioned to supply the necessary resources and expertise, fostering growth through sustained collaboration with HEIW and Cardiff University. This initiative is pivotal in addressing the shortage of Consultant Ophthalmologists in Wales by providing essential training facilities, enhancing the workforce's competence, and ultimately improving patient care.

### Procurement Information

There is currently a shortage of Consultant Ophthalmologist in Wales, with further challenges in recruiting and retaining new trainee Consultant Ophthalmologists. The scale of this shortage was recently highlighted in an external report which showed that there are currently 1.8 Ophthalmology Consultant per 100,000 population which is the lowest in the UK. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists recommends that there should be 3 to 3.5 Consultant Ophthalmologists per 100,000 population. The provision of high-quality simulation training has recently become a mandatory requirement of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists training curriculum. This includes a requirement for simulation training before a trainee operates on a patient. The deliver this for trainees in Wales a dedicated Ophthalmic Simulation Suite in Cardiff University's School of Optometry and Vision sciences has been developed and funded through Welsh Government funding. HEIW have commissioned access to the equipment and facilities within the Simulation Suite for trainees on the Ophthalmology Specialist Training Programme in Wales. Whilst facilities and resources are available at different centres across the UK these are not available for Wales trainees to access. Trainees will be accessing the facilities on a weekly basis taking time out of their clinical roles to develop these essential skills to improve patient care. The ophthalmology simulation suite aligns with 3 of the 4 of HEIW's externally facing strategic objectives: 1. to lead the planning, development, and wellbeing of a competent, sustainable, and flexible workforce to support the delivery of 'A Healthier Wales'. 2. to improve the quality and accessibility of education and training for all healthcare staff ensuring that it meets future needs. 3 to develop the workforce to support the delivery of safety and quality.
