## Summary

The NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership-Procurement Services, hosted by Velindre University NHS Trust, has awarded a contract titled "CLI-VEA-57525 BREAST CANCER ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE". This procurement falls under the health industry category and relates to utilising artificial intelligence to support pathologists in assessing and quantitating tumour markers in breast cancer biopsies. The process was conducted as a limited procurement method without prior publication of a call for competition, driven by the need to extend a successful pilot across all Welsh Health Boards. The main contract value is GBP 163,447.96, signed on 16 October 2024, and all deliveries are to take place in the UK (region: UKL).

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in medical analytics, particularly those proficient in AI technologies for pathology. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) like Ibex Medical Analytics Ltd, who have been awarded the contract, are particularly well-suited for such opportunities due to their agility and innovative approaches. Companies capable of developing or supplying advanced AI solutions can compete effectively in this space, especially if they have a track record of successful implementation in health services. The established infrastructure and data protection measures within NHS Wales facilitate a seamless integration of these advanced technological solutions into the existing health services.

## Notice

Utilising AI to support Pathologists in assessing and quantitating tumour markers when reporting breast cancer biopsies.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

Utilising AI to support pathologists in the review of the slides, in identifying, grading and characterizing suspected findings of cancer in breast biopsy specimens and in filling slide- and case-level reports. The application also supports the pre-ordering of Breast tumour biomarkers based on the detection and characterization of Invasive breast cancer.

### Procurement Information

A successful pilot in BCUHB is utilising AI to support Pathologists in assessing and quantitating tumour markers when reporting breast cancer biopsies. It is proposed to utilise additional funding awarded from Welsh Government to roll out this development to all Health Boards. All Health Boards in Wales utilise Ibex for prostate biopsies, and it is also already used in BCUHB for breast biopsies. The infrastructure is in place within NHS Wales to use this system, including an existing Data Protection Impact Assessment. Due to the time constraints of the funding it is not feasible to roll out the use of a different supplier at this time. For the reasons outlined above and to ensure the success of the project, NHS Wales have no option but to enter in to an agreement without any formal underpinning Framework Agreement for a 12 month period.
