HEROS supports the Welsh Historic Environment Record (HER). The HER is curated by Heneb: the Trust for Welsh Archaeology, and gathers, records and makes available information on the historic environment of Wales. The Heneb HER, which has been developed over a period of over thirty years, consists of four regional databases running on the open source software, HEROS. It currently contains information on over 400,000 sites, landscape areas and events, a number which is increasing at a rate of between 5-10% per annum. It is the primary source of information on all aspects of the local historic environment of Wales, and acts as a tool for recording the on-going process of its interpretation, conservation and management. The HER underpins all Heneb's activities and is also vital to the work of others who have a role in the investigation and management of the historic environment in Wales, including government at both a national and local level.HEROS, as a content management system runs on a PHP and Javascript codebase, interfacing with a MYSQL (MariaDB) database for data management, including geospatial data. It currently runs on a XAMPP stack, on a Windows Server 2022 Standard Edition.
