The project will deliver new infrastructure and environmental improvements with the objective of creating a world class business and commercial location around the airport and existing manufacturing centres in the heart of Renfrewshire. The Council is currently conducting a procurement process for the contract for the design and construction works for the GAIA project and the construction is expected to commence in late 2018. On 11 December 2017, the Scottish Government announced that GAIA will be the site of the new National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland (NMIS), the first major developer to commit to the GAIA site.
