## Summary

The Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (Utility) is leading a public procurement process for the "CMAL0188 Tarbert Harris Ground Investigation Works", a project aimed at upgrading the Ferry Terminal at Tarbert, Harris, UK. The procurement stage is currently at the 'Award' phase, with a contract valued at £52,800 awarded to Causeway Geotech Ltd. The contract was signed on 26th February 2018, following an open procurement method initiated earlier this year. The ground investigation tasks include the dredging of seabed areas, extension of marshalling facilities, construction of a new terminal building, and reconstruction of pier structures, set to commence on 12th March 2018 and concluding by 1st June 2018.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in civil engineering, geotechnical investigations, and marine works. Companies that can demonstrate experience in marine and land-based geotechnical investigations, particularly those with a focus on coastal or ferry terminal projects, would find themselves well-positioned to compete. Additionally, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to participate, as evidenced by the application of competitive SME bidding in the earlier phases of the tender process.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

Of the proposed 12 boreholes, 2 will be land based boreholes and 10 will be marine boreholes. A location plan and a layout plan for the site are included with the Contract Drawings. The Tarbert Ferry Service is operated by Calmac Ferries Limited (CFL). The car and passenger ferry service shall continue to operate throughout the period of the ground investigation works, except during periods when adverse weather prevent the service from operating on the published timetable. The pier is weight limited and exclusively utilised by the ferry service. However, there are pontoons and moorings adjacent to the Site that are utilised by local fishing, work and leisure vessels. Access to the proposed borehole locations will need to be organised through the Engineer, in close consultation with the Harbour Master. S1.3 Main Works Proposed and Purpose of this Contract The purpose of this Ground Investigation Contract is to obtain information to support the design and construction of the main project for upgrading the Ferry Terminal at Tarbert, Harris. Upgrading works include the following key elements: - Dredge of seabed areas to -5.0mCD; - Extend the marshalling area and entrance; - Build and new ferry terminal building; - Reconstruct and extend the pier structures; and - Construct new fendering. The ground investigation has been designed to facilitate the following: - Development of a suitable dredging method; - Provision of design information on the underlying soil for the marshalling area extension design; - Provision of design information for bearing pile design - ultimate bearing capacity of rock; - Provision of design information for the rock socketing of piles; - Provision of design information for ground anchors; - Provision of design information for infill / reclamation; - Provision of design information for building foundations; - Provision of design information for temporary works. Generally the boreholes are to be progressed to 2m embedment into the underlying rockhead. However, in the area of the proposed pier, boreholes need to be progressed to 10m into the rockhead to facilitate proposed ground anchor design. The key requirements of the ground investigation are set out in S1.4. Scope of Investigation The contract provides for ground investigation at selected locations, as indicated on the Contract Drawings, and for in situ and laboratory testing of sampled materials as detailed in the Specification Schedules and Bill of Quantities. The ground investigation works include 12 boreholes within the area of the proposed Ferry Terminal Improvements. These comprise: - 5 boreholes (1 land, 4 marine) are to be undertaken in the proposed marshalling area; - 2 boreholes (2 marine) are to be undertaken in the proposed dredge area; - 1 borehole (marine) is to be undertaken at the area of seabed between the pier and linkspan for the proposed dredge and pier; - 1 borehole (marine) is to be undertaken at the berthing face for temporary works and pier design; - 2 boreholes (marine) are to be undertaken at the proposed pier; - 1 borehole (landside) is to be undertaken at the proposed pier bankseat; The ground investigation has been designed to obtain the following design information: - Soils (Granular) - Depths, descriptions, effective angles of shearing resistance, particle size distributions, settlement characteristics and SPTs. - Soils (Cohesive) - Depths, descriptions, undrained / drained shear strengths, particle size distributions, settlement characteristics and SPTs. - Bedrock - Depths, descriptions, rock quality designations (RQD), uniaxial compressive strengths (UCS), quartz contents (alpha quartz) (using XRD) and point load strength indices (IS50), and orientation and angles of bedding planes.
