Whilst the nature of healthcare leads to a significant use of single use items NHSScotland acknowledges the need to review the use of single use products and the possibility of moving to durable alternatives and where this is not possible look for remanufacture/recovery opportunities to keep valuable resources in use for longer. It is estimated by NHSScotland that there is an opportunity to move to more circular systems of supply and management for over 50% of non-pharmaceutical spend, and that this in turn will drive cost savings as well as environmental savings in terms of reduced carbon impact..
