## Summary

The Scottish Government is conducting a tender titled "Developing a method to estimate the costs of soil erosion in high-risk Scottish catchments." The procurement method is an open procedure within the services category. The tender period is set to end on 27th September 2018, with bid opening scheduled for the same day. This project aims to develop a method for estimating both on-site and off-site costs of soil erosion, using case studies from Scotland and is located in Edinburgh, UK.

This tender presents substantial opportunities for businesses focused on environmental research, data analysis, or agricultural consultancy, particularly those passionate about sustainability and ecological impacts. Companies with expertise in soil erosion, environmental economics, or agri-food supply chains would be particularly well-suited to compete, as they can leverage their specialised knowledge to contribute innovative solutions and robust methodologies for assessing soil erosion costs.

## Notice

The aim of this research project is to develop and apply a practical, transparent and robust method to estimate the on-site and off-site (external) costs of soil erosion, using illustrative case studies from Scotland.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

Assess the state of the evidence base since the Glenk (2010) report, relevant to: estimating costs of soil erosion on-site to the land-based business, and knock-on effects along the agri-food supply chain; estimating external costs in relation to wider (off-site) societal impacts (loss of organic matter, CO2 emissions, changes in drinking water quality, damage to infrastructure and increased flood risk) estimating defensive and mitigation costs, i.e. of measures to reduce or prevent soil erosion (costs and benefits accruing to the land-based business or wider society). Include an outline of new evidence and data, areas where evidence is under active debate and current evidence/data gaps and how these might be addressed in future. Use illustrative case studies to estimate i) on-site costs of soil erosion (to land-based businesses and the agri-food supply chain); ii) externalised costs associated with loss of organic matter, CO2 emissions, changes in drinking water quality, damage to infrastructure and increased flood risk; iii) defensive and mitigation costs, explaining how potential double-counting has been addressed. The method should also be applied to a catchment where there is little soil erosion to act as a comparator. Document and evaluate the methods used, identifying assumptions and limitations, and assess potential for further development or application, e.g. how the approach might be used to inform thinking on future agricultural support mechanisms and/or payments for Ecosystem Services.
