## Notice

We are seeking a supplier or suppliers to provide a package of training courses and events targeted at stakeholders of the historic built environment including but not limited to, contractors, building professionals and council officers. This is being led by the Fraserburgh Town Centre Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) Team, a heritage led regeneration initiative that awards grants to projects that improve the quality of the historic built environment. The aims of the CARS project is to conserve and enhance the historic built environment via repair programmes for priority projects and small grant schemes for homeowners and retailers. In addition, community engagement, education programmes and training opportunities for traditional craftspeople and contractors.

Masonry & Lime - course for building professionals, home owners with special interest, site managers and students of the Built Environment

Course to demonstrate and provide practical experience of the techniques, tools and materials (lime mortars for pointing, rendering, harling and lime washing) appropriate for traditional buildings. Particular attention to be paid to the prevailing Fraserburgh weather conditions, ashlar pointing and maintenance of granite buildings in terms of lime applications. Participants should learn about the composition, specification and application of historic mortars and binders, and be able to choose the right sand and mortar mix for different applications/parts of the building. Hot lime training and application is also to figure here.

Traditional Lime Mortars - course for contractors

Course aimed at building contractors based in Fraserburgh area with interest in an accreditation on lime mortars. This course should provide attendees with a strong understanding of lime technology required for assessment and accreditation of SQA National Unit 1 - 'Preparing and Using Basic Lime Mixes'. The course should enable participants to complete pointing work to traditional buildings to a high standard as well as help participants to be prepared to better advise clients on traditional mortars.

Repair of Sash & Case Windows - course for building professionals, home owners with special interest and site managers

Course to demonstrate and provide practical experience in repair and maintenance of traditional sash and case windows. Participants should be able to identify and address problems that commonly occur with sash windows, such as replacing ropes, weights, broken panes, and repair or replacing rotten sills. Also, to recognise the different designs/styles though time, choose best hardwood and oil based paint to use, and to prepare traditional putty. Participants should be able to advise customers on appropriate glazing and options for improving thermal qualities for existing sash & case windows.

Repair of Traditional Shop Fronts - course for building professionals, home owners with special interest, site managers, contractors and students of the Built Environment

Course to be a mix of lecture and practical experience in repair of traditional timber shop fronts and signs. Include examples of good repair practice to talk about design considerations, signage and lettering, and appropriate interventions. Provide insight to conservation and reinstatement of the different elements that make a shop front, such as cornices, timber fascia, console brackets, pilasters and plinths, the lobby and door, and the stall riser. Give examples of restored sun blinds and appropriate security measures, as well as ventilation options to keep fresh air indoors. In the case of external doors, participants should be able to identify and select appropriate traditional mouldings, pilasters and oil based paints.

Roofing and Slating - course for building professionals, home owners with special interest, site managers, contractors and students of the built environment

Course to demonstrate and provide practical experience in the repair and maintenance of traditional roofs, including slating, looking at the under laying (insulation and waterproofing layers) and conservation of rainwater goods. Participants should be able to recognise the structure of roofs, identify different types of trusses, different external roof shapes, their detailing and decorative features. The practical sessions should enable participants to trim and size slates, set out and nail a simple traditional slate roof, execute a mortar skew fillet and install rainwater goods correctly. By the end of the course attendees should also be able to know which statutory consents are needed for this type of work and to identify the variety of slates used in the past and where to look for appropriate Scottish/British slates to use in traditional roofing works.

Domestic Chimneys and Flues - workshop for building professionals, home owners with special interest, site managers, contractors and students of the built environment

Workshop to outline the basic elements of a flue and chimney system and identify common faults, their diagnosis and the principles of how to deal with them. Participants should understand the need to ventilate flues even when these are not in use anymore, and the impact that cement has when repairing chimneys.

Stone Decay - workshop for building professionals, home owners with special interest, site managers, contractors and students of the built environment

Workshop to outline the effect of cement use in traditional buildings and identify common faults, their diagnosis and the principles of how to deal with them. Participants should understand the need to use lime mortars and the impact of salts on natural building stone.

Basic Lead Bossing and Welding/ Traditional Leadwork - course for contractors

Course aimed at building contractors based in Fraserburgh area with interest in an accreditation in the use of rolled lead sheet. This course should enable participants to shape and form lead sheet into complex shapes and joints without leaving tool marks, causing any significant reduction in the thickness of the metal, or compromise the weatherproofing of the installation. The practical sessions should enable participants to try hands-on the most common traditional leadwork, such as flashing around chimneys, roof ridges and detailing, valleys and on parapet gutters. By the end of the course, participants should understand the most common cause of defects to leadwork, the implications of lead to contract and expand with changes of temperatures, and the difference between codes of lead.
