## Summary

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is initiating a procurement process for the development of a "Plastic Waste Scanner." This project aims to enhance stakeholders' ability to assess the quality of plastic destined for recycling, thereby addressing environmental concerns. Located in Stirling, Scotland, SEPA is currently at the planning stage and has set a deadline for interested parties to submit questionnaires by 12 Noon on 4 September 2019. The procurement falls under the services category and the relevant industry classification relates to environmental protection.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in environmental technology and waste management solutions. Companies that are adept in developing innovative scanning technologies and those familiar with recycling processes are particularly well-suited to respond. As SEPA seeks to gather insights on existing market solutions or collaborative development proposals, this is an excellent chance for businesses to potentially partner with a key governmental environmental body and contribute to sustainable practices throughout Scotland.

## Notice

This challenge aims to provide a tool that would enable stakeholders in the plastic waste industry to assess the quality of plastic transported for recycling and to discourage any activities that result in environmental harm.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is a non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government. Our role is to ensure that the environment and human health are protected, to ensure that Scotland's natural resources and services are used as sustainably as possible and contribute to sustainable economic growth. With around 1300 staff based across Scotland, we regulate and advise on a wide range of environmental activities and help business and industry to understand and comply with their environmental responsibilities and legislation. In addition, we work in partnership with other agencies, organisations and policy makers, to increase environmental understanding and build consensus on environmental priorities and issues. SEPA was recently successful in an application to the CAN DO Innovation Challenge Fund. This fund supports Scottish public sector organisations to find and develop innovative solutions to operational service and policy delivery challenges. It is managed by a partnership of Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. Our Challenge - What's inside the box? SEPA is interested in working with an organisation(s) to develop a scanner which can assess the quality of recyclate in a bale of plastic waste without destruction of the bale. Further information on the challenge can be found in the document attached. At this stage SEPA is seeking to understand the current state of the market in this area. We are particularly interested in hearing about solutions which could be adapted to meet our need or development of a solution to this problem which is already underway. We would also like to hear from potential partners who may be interested in working with SEPA on the challenge. Interested parties are invited to completed the questionnaire attached to this notice, returning to Procurement.helpdesk@sepa.org.uk by 12 Noon on 4 September 2019. The publication of this PIN does not commit SEPA to any future procurement exercise or the award of any contract.
