The infestation threatens both woodland areas of high value for biodiversity and open moorland habitat. Further spread of the rhododendron will also impede access and is detrimental to crofting practice. The NTS has carried out surveys on the Balmacara Estate to establish the extent and location of rhododendron infestation. A number of compartments that require rhododendron control on the estate have been identified. Some of these have had work carried out and require follow up treatment. Rhododendron in the Lochalsh Woodland Walks has also recently been infected with the pathogen Phytopthora ramorum and there is concern this could reoccur and infect tree species such as Larch. The control programme in this area is consequently of high importance and urgency, as is the protection of Collie Mhor SSSI. Torridon Rhododendron ponticum is a highly invasive species that has spread out from core areas within the Torridon estate. This includes the old country estate houses such as Torridon House, but also from private gardens around the villages of Fasag and Inveralligin. The infestation threatens both woodland areas of high value for biodiversity, such as the Inveralligin SSSI, and is also spreading into newly established crofter forest schemes and the open heath habiatat. The NTS has carried out surveys on the Torridon Estate to establish the extent and location of rhododendron bushes. The survey is the form of a point grid referenced distribution of rhododendron with photographs and a descriptive spreadsheet. Much of the large mature bushed on the NTS ground have already been controlled, mainly with the use of stem treatment so the seed dispersal has now been significantly diminished.
