## Summary

The University of St Andrews is seeking bids for the "Design, Installation and Demonstration of Hydrogen Train" project, which falls under the education sector and is set in St Andrews, Scotland. The procurement process is currently at the Award stage, having been initially published on a tender platform. The contract was awarded on December 21, 2020, with a total value of £2,848,758. This project involves completing an integrated design and demonstrating the hydrogen train over 12 months, aiming to assess modifications relevant to operational railways. Interested parties are encouraged to visit the University's eTendering System to express their interest in future opportunities related to this contract.

This opportunity is ideal for businesses specialising in innovative transportation solutions, particularly those with expertise in hydrogen fuel technologies and railway systems. Companies in the engineering, manufacturing, and environmental sectors would be well-suited to compete for this contract, as it involves not only design and installation but also the development of standards for hydrogen power on passenger trains. With an increasing focus on sustainable practices and the zero-emission requirement for Scotland’s passenger railway by 2035, participating in this pioneering project could significantly enhance a firm's market presence and align its offerings with future transport trends.

## Notice

Over the course of 12 months - completion of full integrated design, first generation drivetrain installed and demonstration of the train in Scotland off Network Rail infrastructure in rail yard and on Bo'Ness and Kinneil heritage railway line, or moved elsewhere. This will allow an assessment to be undertaken that any modifications do not present risks to the operational railway. During this time, if the requirements are that it will eventually run on Network Rail infrastructure, this can be stage 3 of the project as this will be a project in its own right.

Working with the regulatory bodies, develop the necessary standards and controls for the use of hydrogen FC power on passenger rolling stock 3. Inform the passenger rail policy for Independently Powered Multiple Unit use on the Scottish passenger rail network in advance of the zero emission requirement for 2035 on Scotland's passenger railway 4. Demonstrate to the Team Scotland rail community through practical application the operation of hydrogen FC passenger rolling stock 5. Provide the supply chain with the opportunity to develop their skills and advance their knowledge of the application of hydrogen FC technology on passenger rolling stock including hydrogen supply and refuelling infrastructure 6.
