## Summary

The University of Edinburgh recently awarded a contract for "The University of Edinburgh DiRAC-3 MPP HPC System," which pertains to the procurement of a massively parallel supercomputer system, including all necessary servers, storage, and disaster recovery provisions. This procurement falls under the goods category and was conducted through an open procedure. The contract, valued at £6,580,000, was signed on 22 December 2020. The delivery location specified is the University of Edinburgh Advanced Computing Facility in Edinburgh, UK. The procurement process has reached the award stage, following competitive tenders, with three bids submitted, one of which was from a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME).

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in the high-performance computing (HPC) sector, particularly those specialising in supercomputing technologies, server solutions, and data storage systems. Companies with innovative solutions in disaster recovery and high-capacity computing systems would be particularly well-suited to participate in upcoming tenders associated with the University, especially considering the potential for additional investment in further DiRAC-3 deployments in the future. Engaging with the University of Edinburgh could lead to long-term partnerships, given the contract term of up to four years that allows for future investment contingent on performance and value for money.

## Notice

A massively parallel (MPP) supercomputer system including all associated servers, storage and disaster recovery provisioning, required for the operation of the DiRAC 3 Extreme Scaling computer resource.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

A further competition against the Southern Universities Purchasing Consortium's framework agreement for Servers, Storage and Solutions National Agreement (SSSNA Reference ITS4031, Lot 3B, HPC and DIC), for a massively parallel (MPP) supercomputer system including all associated servers, storage and disaster recovery provisioning, required for the operation of the DiRAC 3 Extreme Scaling computer resource.

Options: There is potentially an additional sum, amounting to ca. 70% of this initial CAPEX investment, to be made available in FY 2021-22, or later, to support further DiRAC-3 deployment. The University reserves the right to award that business without re-opening this competition to the successful tenderer of this tendering exercise. Any such award will be at the University's sole discretion, and be contingent upon the then-extant supplier being able to demonstrate good value for money in this further investment and a suitable engagement in activities of benefit to the DiRAC stakeholder community. A contract term of 2 + 2 years provides for such additional investment.
