## Summary

The Scottish Government has recently completed a procurement process for the "Inventory of Static Fishing Gear," which falls under the services category. This project aims to enhance the understanding of fishing waste management, particularly regarding the gear used in the fishing industry. The initiative is part of broader efforts to address marine litter, contributing to critical international commitments. The procurement method was an open procedure, with the contract signed on 14th July 2021, valued at £28,945. Key locations for site visits included Fraserburgh, Mallaig, Stornoway, Oban, Eyemouth, and Anstruther.

Businesses specialising in environmental consultancy, data analysis, and fisheries management may find significant opportunities within this context. The focus on reducing marine litter presents a growing field for organisations involved in sustainable practices and waste management solutions. Companies with expertise in materials (specifically in managing polymer types) and experience in engaging with the fishing community would be particularly well-suited to compete in future tenders related to similar projects.

## Notice

1. Marine Scotland is responsible for delivering policy to meet our international and national commitments to reduce marine litter, including fishing industry waste. Fishing waste is a significant contributor to the global plastic pollution problem and better management of this end of life material has been prioritised in our Programme for Government and by the British-Irish Council, OSPAR convention and in the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive. The output from this project will be combined with similar work across other fishing sectors to inform future policy design. Background & Context 2. In order to inform policy development to improve waste management options for the fishing industry as a whole, it is essential that there is a clear understanding of the type, quantity, distribution and average lifespan of all gear. This project focuses on pots and creels and includes gear that is in use, in storage and on order. Type of gear will also include the detail of material (polymer) type as this determines future waste handling options. 3. The use of this gear is widespread and it will not be possible to visit all harbours hosting the relevant fisheries with associated businesses, however it is expected that site visits will include Fraserburgh, Mallaig, Stornoway, Oban, Eyemouth and Anstruther. The contractor will be expected to make direct contact with fishers, gear manufacturers, retailers, harbour offices and other relevant organisations.

Requirement overview 4. This project will involve data collection, analysis and report writing. The final report will summarise the findings by static gear type, area, quantity, polymer type, distribution, expected lifespan and current disposal options with associated costs for static gear. A good understanding of material supply flows and waste management is essential and knowledge of the fishing sector beneficial.
