### Lot Information

Maol Donn

Open moorland on the Goatfell estate has been colonised by Rhododendron ponticum and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), threatening these areas' biodiversity. R. ponticum was introduced to Brodick Castle Gardens as an ornamental species during Victorian times, when it was also planted in shelter belts and as game cover on the wider estate. Over time, R. ponticum and other non-native horticultural species have spread from original plantings, infesting semi-natural woodland and open moorland habitat. On the Goatfell estate, as well as R. ponticum, Sitka spruce seeded into the Maol Donn area from neighbouring Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) plantations has become a problem species, slowly forming dense areas of conifers, and leading to loss of open moorland habitat. The areas affected by INNS on the Goatfell estate are part of the Arran Moors Special Protected Area (SPA) and the Arran Moors Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), both of which include breeding hen harrier Circus cyaneus as one of their notified features. In addition, the SSSI aims to protect upland habitats and its associated breeding bird assemblage. Encroachment by INNS is noted as a negative pressure on both the Arran Moors SPA and SSSI, with Sitka spruce mentioned as a specific threat to the upland habitat assemblage of the later, currently in unfavourable condition. Controlling INNS will contribute to achieving favourable condition for this designation feature and help maintain favourable condition for the remaining features.

Brodick Country Park East

INNS to be removed in this area include Rhododendron ponticum, a highly invasive non-native species which has colonised semi-natural woodland at Brodick Country Park. There is concern that Phytophthora kernoviae or P. ramorum may return to the grounds and threaten the health of native as well as horticultural trees and shrubs, emphasising the high importance of controlling rhododendron, one of its main host species, on the wider estate. Other INNS are scattered across the area in varying densities and are to be tackled as part of this contract. Some of these species are garden escapees, including salmonberry Rubus spectabilis, New Zealand broadleaf Griselinia littoralis, pheasant berry Leycesteria formosa, buddleia and fuchsia spp. Other INNS to be removed are coniferous species naturally regenerating in unwanted quantities from trees originally planted in the Country Park, namely western hemlock Tsuga heterophylla and Sitka spruce Picea sitchensis. Mature specimens of western hemlock and Sitka spruce are to be retained.
