## Summary

The University of Edinburgh has completed a procurement process for the purchasing of an Optical Coherence Tomography system, which offers features like variable scan speed and interchangeable optics. This tender was awarded to Thorlabs, and the contract, valued at £84,148.04, was signed on 26th January 2024. The procurement method used was a limited award procedure without prior publication of a call for competition.

Businesses in the goods category with expertise in providing advanced imaging systems, especially those offering flexible and sensitive solutions, would find opportunities for growth in this tender. The University of Edinburgh sought a unique system for studying dynamic fluid systems, creating opportunities for suppliers with innovative imaging technologies to compete and provide bespoke solutions. This tender signifies a collaboration in the education sector for enhancing research capabilities through cutting-edge equipment.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

The Institute for Condensed Matter and Complex Systems (ICMCS) within the School of Physics and Astronomy (SOPA) are looking to purchase a flexible OCT imagine system, allowing the end users to study several dynamic fluid systems that contain suspended particles. Optical Coherence Tomography is an established imaging technique used to see the retina at the back of the eye. Despite its great potential for viewing structures inside all sorts of opaque samples, it is relatively unused outside of ophthalmology. This equipment will bring a new imaging modality to the suite of techniques in COSMIC (Collaborative Optical Spectroscopy, Micromanipulation and Imaging Centre). It will be of interest to many scientists in ICMCS and beyond. Other short-term applications include imaging of skin and sun cream penetration, and the flow of molten wax to model volcanic lava flow.

### Procurement Information

The Institute for Condensed Matter and Complex Systems (ICMCS) within the School of Physics and Astronomy (SOPA) are looking to purchase a flexible OCT imagine system, allowing the end users to study several dynamic fluid systems that contain suspended particles and to create 3D images and videos of dynamic structures within opaque samples, covering different sizes and speeds There are other manufacturers in the market however they only offer 'black box' OCT systems for the ophthalmology market. These are not appropriate as they are too specific and do not offer the flexibility required. Further research showed several companies could provide individual components that would allow the end user to build their own OCT system. However, the design, construction and maintenance of an OCT system is not their area of expertise. The range of scientific applications requires a flexible and sensitive system. After an exhaustive evaluation of the market, they are confident that the equipment selected represents the only viable solution for their needs - the Thorlabs Telesto TEL221C1/M OCT System. It offers variable scan speed and interchangeable optics so it can be adapted for various applications. These are unique features of the Thorlabs system. Variable scan rate means the end user can choose a slow speed, with higher resolution, for the slowly moving systems (e.g. skin/sun cream), and much faster speed for the more dynamic phenomena (e.g. dense commercial suspensions and droplet evaporation). The interchangeable lenses allow to vary the magnification and the field of view: high magnification for skin/sun cream and low magnification for the flowing wax. Below unique features with the product provides the end user with flexibility, allows for bespoke modifications in the future and makes the instrument more useful for others; - Adjustable A-Scan rate (four different speeds) for high sensitivity or high-speed acquisition. - Well defined AUX port interface for adaptation of customer designed probe head. - Reference arm integrated in probe head (common path) for all scanner types, to prevent influence of polarization by moving fibre. - Easy to integrate objectives with other scan range or working distance. - Two analogue input channels for recording and displaying a signal simultaneously with the OCT signal
