## Summary

The University of Aberdeen has awarded a contract for the provision of a bespoke MRI knee coil array to Wideblue Ltd. The contract, with ID AU23/74, involves the delivery of mechanical components for a radiofrequency coil designed for scanning the human knee using a unique MRI scanner called a Field-Cycling Imaging (FCI) scanner. The University is located in Aberdeen, UK, and the procurement process has progressed to the award stage, with the contract signed on May 31, 2024.

This tender for the bespoke MRI knee coil array presents an opportunity for businesses involved in goods manufacturing and healthcare technology. Suitable businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), in the mechanical and electrical component manufacturing sector would find this contract well-suited for growth. The University of Aberdeen's award of this contract without prior publication of a call for competition offers a chance for businesses to engage in innovative projects requiring specialised technical expertise.

## Notice

This project will deliver mechanical components that will comprise a radiofrequency (RF) coil to be used for scanning the human knee using a novel design of MRI scanner known as a Field-Cycling Imaging (FCI) scanner. The completed coil will be designed to allow scanning of either knee, and will be adjustable to accommodate different knee sizes. The coil will be designed to mechanically mate with the Aberdeen University FCI scanner patient couch and must follow the same aesthetic design as the scanner cowling and existing RF coils. It will be able to electrically interface with the existing scanner connection points. It will be constructed such that it is solvent and chemically resistant (to allow cleaning) and in a way that does not pose a mechanical or electrical hazard to staff or participants.

### Procurement Information

Under clause 6(1)(b)(ii) of the legislation, a contracting authority may award a contract without competition (only where no reasonable alternative or substitute exists, and the absence of competition is not the result of artificial narrowing down of parameters of the procurement). In this case, the grounds for not exposing to competition are as follows: - Building a bespoke device for use on existing unique scanner. It is vital that components are compatible with existing bespoke Field-Cycling Imaging (FCI) scanning equipment to ensure continuity and ability to connect with the existing components.
