## Summary

Scottish Natural Heritage has completed a public procurement process for the environmental restoration and bund creation at Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve in Stirling. The project, listed under the environmental protection industry category, aimed to construct three bunds to manage water flow and prevent peatland degradation. The contract was awarded on 25 November 2024, following an open procedure which began with the tender announcement on 20 September 2024. Malcolm Contracts Ltd was awarded the contract on 1 November 2024, with an estimated completion by 31 March 2025. Key procurement activities took place at Inverness, Scotland.

This tender offers significant business growth opportunities, particularly for SMEs with expertise in environmental restoration and peatland management. Companies specialising in earthworks, ecological improvements, and environmental construction would be well-suited to engage in similar contracts. The significant but manageable contract value of £15,655.2 makes it an attractive project for small to medium-sized enterprises aiming to expand their portfolio and expertise in public sector environmental projects.

## Notice

The aim of this contract is to build 3 bunds along the north/west edge of the designated site. Estimated length 930 meters x 2 - Back-to-back due to water pressure. 425 meters x 1 Excavate the trench to the depth of any cracks, peat pipes or oxidised peat, removing the turf and any oxidised peat and putting to one side. Fill the trench with unoxidized peat, taken from an adjacent borrow pit. The turf of the borrow pit should be removed and put to one side along with any oxidised peat. Use the unoxidized peat from the borrow pit to fill in the trench and compact to create a peat dam within the peat body. Form a low surface bund of no more than 25cm to intercept surface flow and cap with the retained turf. Back fill the borrow pit with degraded peat, reprofile to shallow the angle and stretch the turf to minimise any bare peat. As the peat on the edge of the site is likely to be well oxidised it won't make very suitable bunding material so where possible the underlying clay should be used.
