The determination of the concentration of nutrients in the water provides an important indication of nutrient enrichment and the potential for eutrophication. These data are routinely collected by MD environmental scientists to study the seawater dissolved inorganic nutrients and to assess the eutrophication levels in Scottish coastal and offshore waters. This information is used to fulfil Scottish Government requirements for a number of statutory monitoring and report obligations about the status of the marine environment. They are also used by other MD colleagues and submitted to national/international databases.
