## Summary

The University of Edinburgh has successfully awarded a contract related to the purchase of aerobic and anaerobic microbial fermenters. The buying organisation, University of Edinburgh, located at Charles Stewart House, 9-16 Chambers Street, Edinburgh, sought to bolster their research capabilities within the Wallace Lab at the School of Biological Services by acquiring specialised fermenters necessary for a recently funded Engineering Biology Hub project. The procurement was classified under the "Education" industry category and involved a limited procurement method due to technical specifications that only a single supplier, Bioprocess Engineering Services Ltd (BPES), could meet. The contract, identified as NCA21277 and valued at EUR 127,130.12, was signed on 24 October 2024, marking the transition from the tender to the award stage, with key delivery taking place in Edinburgh (EH9 3FF).

This tender provides significant business growth opportunities, particularly for suppliers specialising in niche scientific equipment that meets specific research requirements. SMEs involved in the design, distribution, or servicing of laboratory equipment would find such tenders particularly suited to their capabilities. The emphasis on unique technological specifications opens opportunities for companies that offer customised or exclusive solutions, underlining the importance of innovation and specialisation in securing such contracts. With specific conditions rendering standard market products unviable, businesses positioned to offer tailored solutions can gain a competitive advantage in the public sector market by addressing precise institutional needs like those presented by the University of Edinburgh.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

This Contract Award is to purchase 2 x n.4 IO1000, fully electric mini fermenters (1 L total volume), A Solaris product via the only UK accredited re-seller Bioprocess Engineering Services Ltd. This product is the only product available on the market currently that can meet the specification required to be sited in the only suitable Laboratory, which has restrictions on available Utilities. It is not either financially viable, nor practicable to have the Laboratory refurbished to site additional access to the necessary utilities to open up the market. This is a purchase to support the School of Biological Services.

### Procurement Information

The purchase of two (2) fermenters is required to support research planned for a recently funded Engineering Biology Hub (Preventing Plastic Pollution using Engineered Biology, P3EB) that will focus on the engineering of microorganisms to valorise plastic waste into medicinal and fragrance intermediates and products. These reactors will be used to begin the translation and scale-up from laboratory scale (ca. 250 mL shake-flasks) into small-scale bioreactors, so that for the first-time research can begin to test parameters such as pH control, dissolved oxygen, substrate feeding regimes, to isolate preparative quantities of the projects that are being targeted. The products to be purchased had to be a small foot print but more importantly with a Peltier system that negated the need for a water jacket. The laboratory that is available for this project does not have an adequate water supply for the majority of market products and to deliver the required water into the laboratory via an estates and capital request is not practicable. The Solaris products are the only products that contain Peltier systems with no water jackets, making their products the only products that could be purchased for this project. These are sold in the UK by Bioprocess Engineering Services Ltd, the only accredited UK re-seller, which has been confirmed by Solaris.
