## Summary

The University of Edinburgh has completed a procurement for a confocal microscope, specifically the Nikon AXR-NSPARC model, to replace their old Nikon A1R confocal. This procurement falls under the education sector and will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, within the UKM75 region. The procurement stage is now at the contract award phase, with significant details being finalized on 30th January 2025. The new confocal microscope will be situated in the IMPACT imaging facility at the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences (CDBS), and the contract was awarded to Nikon UK for a value of £334,000.

This procurement opens new avenues for businesses, particularly those involved in supplying advanced scientific equipment, to collaborate with a prestigious institution like the University of Edinburgh. Companies specialising in life sciences equipment, materials, and services will find this an attractive opportunity, especially those able to provide cutting-edge imaging technologies. The open-access nature of the IMPACT imaging facility also encourages external academic and commercial clients, broadening the potential client base and fostering partnerships within the medical and veterinary sciences community.

## Notice

The University of Edinburgh arr purchasing a Nikon AXR-NSPARC point-scanning confocal microscope as a direct replacement for our now end-of-life Nikon A1R confocal. The AXR-NSPARC has a new optical microscope stand, along with an enhanced laser bed, electronics and scan head. These additions improve image quality while reducing scan time and increasing throughput. Additionally, this microscope also has the super-resolution NSPARC unit which will allow us to resolve features down to 100 nm. We will reuse the optical table, objective lenses, piezo stage, computer work-station and Nikon NIS-Elements software from the old Nikon A1R on the new system, saving costs and improving sustainability. The new system will be situated in the IMPACT imaging facility, Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences (CDBS), 2nd floor, Hugh Robson Building, George Square and replace the Nikon A1R which will be decommissioned. The Nikon AXR-NSPARC will be one of the workhorses of the facility and will be routinely used by over 10 groups in CDBS, imaging a diverse range of samples from animal model brain sections, organoids, artificial organ rudiments (kidney) and others. The IMPACT imaging facility is open-access, available to all across CMVM (College of medicine and Vet Medicine) and UoE (University of Edinburgh). We also encourage external academic and commercial clients to use the facility.
