## Summary

The University of Edinburgh has completed the procurement process for the purchase of Magnetotelluric (MT) Equipment to be used in scientific research. The contract, valued at £326,051.80, was signed on 6th March 2025, with Phoenix Geophysics Limited, a company based in Toronto, Canada, being the awarded supplier. This procurement falls under the education industry category, specifically for scientific equipment, and will be delivered to the University located at Charles Stewart House, Edinburgh. The process was executed without a prior call for competition due to the unique technical requirements that only the existing supplier could meet.

This tender offers significant opportunities for businesses involved in the supply of specialised scientific instruments, exemplifying how fulfilling niche technical needs can secure high-value contracts. Companies that develop or distribute advanced geophysical equipment, particularly those used in challenging environments like the Antarctic, would be well-suited to potentially compete in similar procurements. Additionally, firms that can deliver unique technical solutions with minimal competition might find particular success in responding to such tenders, ultimately leading to business growth and expanded market reach.

## Notice

### Procurement Information

The purchase of five additional Magnetotelluric (MT) stations will allow a greater number of instruments to be used in the field at the same time, thus allowing a larger area to be studied, in less time. It is vital to the science that is undertaken by the users of the MT equipment that the frequency response of the magnetic sensors is the same across all equipment, as mixing and matching different types will introduce variations across the signal recorded. When the MT equipment is used in ice and snow environments such as those of the Antarctic the high impedance of the ice and snow makes electrical measurements hard to obtain. The existing supplier of MT equipment (Phoenix Geophysics) have a pre-amp system that uses a titanium electrode along with an electronics pack to measure these signals. They are the only supplier of these pre-amp systems. That it is why Phoenix Geophysics have been identified as the only one suitable supplier to deliver these additional five MT stations.
