## Summary

The University of Edinburgh has concluded a contracting process for the purchase of a Nikon Spinning Disc Upgrade to enhance its Light Microscopy Core. This procurement falls within the education sector and involves the purchase of high-speed imaging equipment. The procurement method was conducted without prior publication due to technical reasons, justifying the exclusive supply from Nikon UK Limited. The contract, valued at £187,000, has been signed on 7 March 2025, with the upgraded equipment to be delivered to the university's March Building located in Edinburgh.

This tender represents an opportunity for businesses specialising in scientific and imaging equipment, particularly those offering high-resolution microscopy tools. Such companies can benefit by engaging with research institutions like the University of Edinburgh to provide cutting-edge technology solutions. Large, technologically advanced firms, as well as suppliers with unique and specialised equipment, would be well-suited to compete in similar procurement processes, enhancing their portfolio and reputation in the academic and research sectors.

### Lot Information

Lot 1

Purchase of a Yokagawa W1 spinning disk unit to upgrade a microscope currently housed in the Light Microscopy Core.

### Procurement Information

The Light Microscopy Core (LMC) purchased a Yokagawa W1 spinning disk unit to upgrade a microscopy currently housed in the LMC. This equipment will enable the LMC to perform very high-speed imaging of live samples with greatly reduced phototoxic/photobleaching effects. This ability is transformative for the research groups using the facility and opens up the possibility of high resolution, high speed timelapse imaging which has been an unfulfilled requirement for a number of years. The configuration of the current microscope uses existing Nikon software. Utilising a different software would compromise required output of the existing microscope which is being upgraded to allow further functionality. Therefore, this upgrade can only be provided by Nikon.
