BACKGROUND The RSPB Abernethy Reserve is located in Strathspey, near to Nethy Bridge. The Reserve comprises over 5000ha of remnant Caledonian pine forest including 1600ha of Scots Pine Plantation. The plantation area is managed primarily to return it to a forest of more natural character over a 200 year period, this includes a combination of; leaving areas to self-thin; creating dead wood; thinning; felling, and; timber extraction. CRAIGMORE PLANTATION Craigmore is a plantation mainly consisting of Scots pine that lies to the north of the main reserve. The tender area is approximately 60ha of scots pine, this will be referred to as the "the work site". There are three main entrances to Craigmore plantation which are linked by a network of gravel roads. The entrances for Craigmore and the work site are shown on Map - See ITT for map
