## Summary

NHS Grampian, based in Aberdeen, has completed the procurement process for a 'Point of Care Troponin Testing Trial' within the health industry category. The procurement was limited, with an award procedure conducted without prior publication of a call for competition. The goal of the trial is to assess the effectiveness of transitioning from laboratory-based testing to point-of-care testing in the Emergency Department of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. This initiative could potentially decrease patient wait times and reduce transportation expenses within the Grampian region. The contract, valued at £61,554, was signed on 16 February 2026, marking the completion of the award stage.

This tender represents an opportunity for suppliers specialising in health diagnostics and medical equipment to collaborate with NHS Grampian, particularly those capable of providing innovative solutions for point-of-care testing in emergency medical settings. Although the procurement method was limited, indicating a focused supplier choice, such trials can offer insights into potential future contracts and demand within similar contexts. Large-scale businesses with the ability to supply advanced diagnostic equipment, like Abbott Rapid Diagnostics Limited, which has been involved in this contract, are well-suited to engage with similar healthcare-focused projects and help drive innovation in medical diagnostics.

## Notice

A short trial to examine the utility, sensitivity and specificity of moving from a lab based testing to a point of care test with the Emergency Department.

### Procurement Information

A short trial to examine the utility, sensitivity and specificity of moving from a lab based testing to a point of care test with the Emergency Department. This will in turn provide a framework to reduce wait times for patients in the Emergency Department and reduce transport costs from the regional hubs in Grampian. The Point of Care Team are providing support for the Trial Period and the supplier is loaning four extra meter systems. Due to the short life span of the cartridges and the required refrigerated storage, a call off has been arranged with the supplier to ensure optimum shelf life.
