## Summary

The University of Edinburgh has awarded a contract titled "Cameca IMS 7F Geo Service Contract" within the education sector, classified under CPV code 50410000. The contract pertains to the School of GeoSciences' maintenance requirements for the CAMECA IMS 7f-GEO instrument, a critical analytical tool for Earth and Environmental Science research across the UK. This contract, which has been active since 1 March 2026, involves a 36-month Gold service agreement to ensure continued reliable operations, with an option for additional coverage. The procurement process employed was limited, specifically awarded without a prior competition call, based on technical grounds highlighting CAMECA as the sole provider of necessary proprietary components. The contract, valued at 342,599 EUR, was signed at the seller's French location but will be executed in Edinburgh, UK, at the University of Edinburgh's School of Geoscience.

This tender may attract businesses that specialise in offering proprietary technical support or services in the Earth and Environmental Science sector. Given the specialised nature of the instrument involved, companies with capabilities in instrumentation maintenance, specifically those aligned with higher education and scientific enquiry, may benefit from engaging with such contracts. The contractual relationship with establishments like the University of Edinburgh can provide long-term stability and showcase opportunities for businesses that focus on offering technical innovations or specialised manufacturing of analytical instruments. As the contract specifies the exclusive need for CAMECA’s components, firms with similar specific expertise or unique offerings in complementary services may find it challenging to enter this competitive space; however, collaboration opportunities with CAMECA could be explored for potential growth.

## Notice

The School of GeoSciences operates a CAMECA IMS 7f-GEO instrument to deliver a national analytical service for Earth and Environmental Science researchers across the UK under the management of NERC. The system was installed and formally accepted in February 2019 with an initial three-year warranty, followed by three one-year extended warranty periods in 2022, 2023 and 2024. The current service contract expires on 28 February 2026. To ensure continued operational reliability and avoid disruption to this nationally important facility, a 36-month Gold service agreement, together with RF source replacement, is required. As CAMECA is the sole manufacturer and provider of proprietary components and technical support, all replacement parts must be sourced directly from them. The proposed 36-month renewal will maintain instrument performance, safeguard research continuity, and enable the ongoing provision of analytical services to the UK Earth and Environmental Science community. An optional additional 36-month coverage period is available should extended support be required.
